Newark Housing Authority Scholarship Foundation (NHASF)
Founded 20 years ago, the Newark Housing Authority Scholarship Foundation (NHASF) has awarded almost $500,000 in scholarships and financial assistance for related college costs to 300 economically disadvantaged young people who reside in Newark’s public housing developments. Often these students hail from single parent households in some of the city’s toughest neighborhoods where crime, drug abuse and low educational expectations are the norm. These ambitious young people are often the first in their family to attend college and break the cycle of poverty. In addition to demonstrating financial need, the students excel academically and participate in a range of community and extracurricular activities.
Since its inception, NHASF recipients have attended local, regional and nationally recognized schools and universities such as Harvard, Wellesley, Seton Hall, Drew, NJIT, Morehouse and Howard. Graduates are now employed as teachers, lawyers, accountants and pharmacists.
This year the foundation will award $20,000 in scholarships to graduating high school students. We are happy to announce that the Foundation is now accepting applications for this year. Applications must be postmarked by May 15, 2008 for consideration.
